This is NOT about golf discounts this time.

Tiger Woods Foundation

Help us help Tiger …

Sorry for the non-golf discount related newsletter this week, but we wanted to share this piece of news as the principals behind TeeTimes.net are also involved with the company that powers the social fundraising engine that makes this entire campaign possible .

If you haven’t already seen or heard the news, earlier this morning Tiger Woods and the Tiger Woods Foundation launched a fundraising campaign on Facebook to raise money for 10 underserved students to attend college.

The person who helps Tiger raise the most money will win a trip to Washington D.C. in June to play in the Pro-Am tournament as part of the AT&T National. The winner will also receive a personal putting lesson from Tiger himself. The fundraising campaign will be conducted on Tiger’s personal Facebook page via the streamlined FundRazr application. Golfers and golfer wannabes from around the world can contribute as little as $1 to the scholarship program. The six-week campaign, beginning today, will conclude on May 14.Every dollar raised will be personally matched by Woods with all proceeds going directly to the Earl Woods Scholars.

We encourage everyone to participate in this innovative fundraising initiative, or at a minimumshare it on Facebook and tell your friends.

Sincerely,

Eco-Friendly Golf, Wallet-Friendly Prices

Golf may be rooted in tradition, but that doesn’t mean it can’t change with the times.

Environmental sensitivity hasn’t always been the rule at golf courses, which require massive amounts of water, fertilizer and pesticides to remain pristinely green. Maintenance practices have progressed mightily in recent years, though, and many courses have cut down their use of precious H2O and harmful chemicals.

LINKSMagazine recently recognized what it calls the“10 Most Eco-Friendly Courses” in the U.S., and the list includes TeeTimes.net member Old Corkscrew Golf Club in Estero, Fla. Checking in at No. 9, Old Corkscrew uses just 83 of 275 available acres for turfgrass – greatly reducing irrigation needs – while preserving more than 40 acres for conservation purposes. Invasive plants have been removed, native plants added, and the entire property boasts a natural, old-Florida feel.

Old Corkscrew just happens to be a fantastic golf course, too. Designed by Jack Nicklaus, the layout offers a stunning array of scenery and challenge, making it an absolute must-play on the state’s west coast.

For the best rates at Old Corkscrew and hundreds of other great courses, always book throughTeeTimes.net. Scroll down to find this week’s featured foursome, with the weekend’s top deals listed on the left.

Until next time, hit ’em long and straight.

Key: Upscale — $75 and up; Mid-range — $40-$74; Value — Less than $40
Featured Course: UpscaleKahili GC
Wailuku, Maui, Hi.
From $75

The foothills of the West Maui Mountains provide splendid terrain and views, making Kahili one of the island’s most popular tracks. The course isn’t especially long at 6,570 yards, but it’s not especially easy, either. Your score will depend largely on how well you handle Kahili’s hilly par 4s.

Featured Course:
Mid-range
Santa Clara Golf & Tennis Club
Santa Clara, Calif.
From $43

Few architects have left a broader, deeper mark on California golf than the late Robert Muir Graves. At Santa Clara G&TC, he layered fairways over gentle slopes while placing 58 bunkers and complementary water hazards with his typical precision. The course makes a great breather from the everyday stress of Silicon Valley.

Featured Course:
Mid-range
Rose Hill GC
Bluffton, S.C.
From $48

A Low Country high point, Rose Hill accentuates all the area’s best traits: oak trees draped with Spanish Moss, shimmering wetlands and wildlife galore. Don’t let your mind wander too far, though. Despite its peaceful setting, Rose Hill can turn beastly – like one of the native gators – if approached carelessly.

Featured Course:ValueHeritage Isles GC
Tampa, Fla.
From $20

Jed Azinger, brother of Paul, teamed with Gordon Lewis on this Tampa Bay jewel. Landing areas are wide, but bordered by ponds and wetlands. In other words, if you stray, don’t stray far. A sharp short game also comes in handy at Heritage Isles, which ends with a bang on the risk-reward 18th.

Olympic-Sized Deals at TeeTimes.net

What Gil Hanse lacks in name recognition, he clearly made up for in vision. On March 7, the highly respected architect was chosen to design the golf course for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. There was some seriously stiff competition for the job, the most coveted course-design contract in memory. Hanse, partnering with former LPGA great Amy Alcott, beat the favored team of Jack Nicklaus and Annika Sorenstam as well as Greg Norman/Lorena Ochoa, Gary Player, Robert Trent Jones Jr. and Tom Doak – Hanse’s good friend and former boss.

In choosing Hanse, the selection committee cited the quality of his proposal’s “design characteristics, including accentuation of the natural dune formations and retention of the natural contours of the land.” Hanse is a leading proponent of so-called “minimalist” architecture, and he’s earned praise for the environmental sensitivity of his courses.

If Hanse’s name rings a bell, you must have read last week’s newsletter. It’s been a big couple of weeks for the 48-year-old architect, who was just chosen by new Doral owner Donald Trump to remodel the resort’s TPC Blue Monster (which is hosting the WGC-Cadillac Championship this weekend).Speaking of this weekend, U.S. clocks will spring forward for Daylight Savings Time, otherwise known as “the six months with the most golfable hours.” Book your group at one of our featured foursome, below, or another of the hundreds of great tracks offering discounted rates at TeeTimes.net.

From $58.85Windsor Parke has been a winner from the start, garnering Best New Course honors (No. 4 nationally) from Golf Digest in 1992. Featured Course:
Mid-range
Anaheim Hills GC
Anaheim, Calif.

Fabled Doral to Get Trump Treatment; Treat Yourself to Discount Golf

What will the Donald do with Doral?

That’s the $150 million question now that Donald Trump has purchased Miami’s venerable Doral Resort for that very amount. Trump’s latest outlandish outlay lands him a five-course spread that includes the famed TPC Blue Monster, host to next week’s WGC Cadillac Championship and a 50-year fixture on the PGA Tour schedule.

The Blue Monster’s Dick Wilson design has undergone many facelifts over the years, and Trump – surprise! – plans to put his own stamp on it. The encouraging news is that Gil Hanse, a highly respected if underappreciated architect, is Trump’s choice to handle the makeover.

Of course, Doral boasts four other tracks – the Gold,Great WhiteJim McLean and Red courses — each a worthwhile play in its own right. The entire golf buffet that is Doral is bookable via TeeTimes.net.

Ponte Vedra, Fla.
From $86.50

You’re no doubt familiar with the TPC Sawgrass Stadium Course, but its sibling is no second fiddle. Also designed by Pete Dye, the Valley Course offers a bit more room to roam, and its corridors look even wider if you’ve just played the Stadium Course. Still, there’s water on 14 holes, so it’s not like Pete went totally soft.

TeeTimes.net Welcomes TPC Sawgrass’ Stadium and Valley Golf Courses

TeeTimes.net Welcomes TPC Sawgrass Stadium and Valley Golf Courses

This one deserves a drum roll.

(Drum roll sound…) Ladies and gentlemen, presenting the newest member of the TeeTimes.net family… (More drum roll…) TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla. That’s right, we’re proud to offer discounted tee times on both the Players Stadium Course andDye’s Valley Course at PGA Tour headquarters.

By any measure, the Stadium Course ranks among golf’s most famous venues; even non-golfers recognize its island-green 17th hole. As the site of the annual Players Championship – aka golf’s “fifth major” — the Stadium Course has crowned champions including Fred Couples, Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson. It currently ranks No. 41 on Golf Digest’s list of America’s 100 Greatest and is an absolute must-play for any passionate golfer.

The Valley Course, also designed by Pete Dye, would be the main attraction most anywhere else. A little less in-your-face than its famous sibling, the Valley earns plenty of raves in its own right. It’s absolutely worth playing either in tandem with the Stadium Course, or as a stand-alone outing.

Our ever-expanding database features hundreds more top-flight tracks across the U.S., Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, Europe and Africa, so be sure to book your next round at TeeTimes.net.

From $69

John Fought and Tom Lehman teamed up to design one dramatic golf course in the foothills of the White Tank Mountains west of Phoenix. The views, as you might imagine, are spectacular. Featured Course:
Mid-range
Eagle Creek GC
Orlando, Fla.
From $45.36

We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again: No architect working today does Florida better than Ron Garl. A great addition to the Lake Nona scene.

Phoenix Golf Gets its Due; TeeTimes.net Delivers the Deals

Max Adler, a longtime writer at Golf Digest, made a bold move recently. He took a golf trip to Phoenix.

I know what you’re thinking: “Big deal. Phoenix is one of the most obvious places on earth for a golf vacation.”

Yes and no. As Adler’s article points out, when most people think Phoenix golf, they really mean golf in the northern suburb of Scottsdale. Adler’s task was to stay within the bounds of the city proper – not exactly difficult, but it certainly limits the options.

The moral of the story is, Adler found plenty of top-notch courses within easy reach of the airport and downtown. I’m happy to report that four of these gems offer discounted rates through TeeTimes.net, where you’ll find a database loaded with great tracks – and bargains – across Arizona and beyond.

Golf Digest recommended these four courses inside the Phoenix city limits, and we second their selections:

Scroll down to find four more favorites, with a coast-to-coast flavor, all bookable via TeeTimes.net.

Featured Course:UpscaleStrawberry Farms GC
Irvine, Calif.
From $160

With apologies to John Lennon, we’d love to play Strawberry Farms forever. Such is the charm of this Orange County dazzler, whose every nook and cranny screams “must-play!” The rural setting is lovely and sublime, while the holes themselves form one of SoCal’s most challenging tests. The water-heavy finish of 16 — 18 is a doozy.

Featured Course:
Mid-range
Palm Valley GC
Las Vegas, Nev.
From $55

Golf great Billy Casper spent a lot of time in the Las Vegas area, mostly designing golf courses like Palm Valley. The 51-time PGA Tour winner was known as a deadly putter in his playing days, but he showed keen eye for golf’s other elements, too – witness Palm Valley’s elevated, view-enhancing tee boxes and carefully pitched fairways.

Featured Course:
Mid-range
The GC at Johnson Ranch
Queen Creek, Ariz.
From $42.12

Johnson Ranch is really two courses in one. The front nine is a desert-golf delight tracing a broad path across the base of the San Tan foothills. The homeward half elevates the experience into a mountain setting, completing an excellent 18-hole adventure through the best of Arizona golf. Lesser-known designer Kenny Watkins must be mighty proud of this one.

Featured Course:ValuePalisades CC
Clermont, Fla.
From $19

Architect Joe Lee knew the Sunshine State like the back of his hand, so his description of the Palisades CC site as “the most spectacular piece of golf property I have seen in Central Florida” carries some weight. The course’s rolling terrain offers honest-to-goodness views, not to mention shot variety, while Spring Lake is an ever-present joy-slash-nuisance.

Prince Course Gets New Crown; TeeTimes.net Still King of Golf Discounts

One of America’s most feared and revered courses –Princeville’s Prince Course in Hawaii – is a little less fearsome after a recent remodeling.

Robert Trent Jones II, the original designer, filed down some of Princeville’s sharper teeth, reshaping green contours, widening fairways and trimming back overgrown areas to make the course a bit more player-friendly. New grass was installed on the greens, too, and bunkers filled with new sand.

To top it off, the Princeville clubhouse underwent a much-needed refurbishing. All the work should only strengthen the course’s reputation as Hawaii’s best, and one of the country’s finest. It ranks 97th on Golf Digest’s current listing of America’s 100 Greatest.

The Prince Course re-opens March 1, so check back soon for discounted rates at TeeTimes.net.

Featured Course:UpscaleSunRidge Canyon GC
Fountain Hills, Ariz.
From $124.20

You know Lombard St. in San Francisco – the one that winds back and forth down a steep hill? SunRidge Canyon is a lot like that, only it starts on the rim of a canyon and descends to the floor. It comes back up, of course, dishing out a double dose of spectacular views and scintillating golf. Trust us, it’s more fun than navigating Lombard St.

Featured Course:
Mid-range
Falcon Ridge GC
Mesquite, Nev.
From $60

Mesquite offers some of the most amazing terrain ever dedicated to golf, and Falcon Ridge fits perfectly with its picturesque neighbors. Some holes on the 6,550-yard course slide between red rock ridges, while others open wide across the high desert mesa. The scenery alone is worth the visit, but we suggest packing the clubs, too.

Featured Course: ValueWestridge GC
La Habra, Calif.
From $36.50

Robert Muir Graves and Damian Pascuzzo massaged an interesting, challenging course from LA’s southeast slopes. The topography is varied, the Pacific breezes nearly constant and the bunkers plentiful at Westridge, which finishes in high style on holes 16-18. A favorite local wedding spot thanks to the stellar views and meticulous landscaping.

Featured Course:ValueBoca Dunes G&CC
Boca Raton, Fla.
From $39.99

Bruce Devlin and Robert von Hagge teamed up to design a course that’s less water-intensive than many in these parts, relying on thorough bunkering and Atlantic winds to defend par. Boca Dunes can play long at 7,094 yards, but four sets of tees and broad fairways ease its sting. There’s a nine-hole executive course on site as well.

Tour Golfers Prefer Classics; We’re Partial to Great Values

Golf course rankings are a dime a dozen. Sure, they provide great debate fodder, but most lists are riddled with past-their-prime warhorses or courses with better PR firms than shot values.

Here’s an order of merit, though, that really intrigues us:Golf World’s ranking of the PGA Tour host sites as judged by the men who make a living playing them. The magazine got 81 pros to participate in the anonymous survey, the first to go this in-depth on America’s most famous tracks.

The results are at times predictable, at times surprising, and provide great insight into how the world’s best grade a golf course.

Not much drama at the top, as Augusta National (the Masters) ranked No. 1. Next up was Harbour Town Golf Links (RBC Heritage), followed by Riviera CC(Northern Trust Open), Pebble Beach (AT&T National Pro-Am) and Colonial CC (Crowne Plaza Invitational).

Notice a theme? Yep, Tour pros like their courses old and classic.

The TeeTimes.net database features a pair of current PGA venues: No. 28 TPC Scottsdale (Waste Management Phoenix Open), and No. 32 TPC Blue Monster at Doral (WGC Cadillac Championship). Regardless of how you score, it’s always a blast playing in the footsteps of golf’s greatest.

Check out the entire list, including a slide show of the top 10.

If a round on a Tour-caliber course isn’t in the offing this week, no worries. TeeTimes.net has you covered with huge discounts at fantastic golf facilities across the globe. As always, you’re invited to peruse this week’s spotlight courses, featured below.

Until next week, hit ’em long and straight.

Featured Course:UpscaleShingle Creek GC
Orlando, Fla.
From $135

This is no cookie-cutter Central Florida golf course. Shingle Creek owes its natural ambiance to its position at the headwaters of the Everglades. The intricate, interesting design is man-made, of course, with David Harman doing the honors. His creation blends scenery and challenge into one of Orlando’s must-play stops.

Featured Course:Mid-rangeBlack Mountain G&CC
Henderson, Nev.
From $65

Situated 25 minutes from the Vegas Strip, Black Mountain is close enough for convenience, far enough to provide a respite from all the neon and noise. The setting takes center stage, but Black Mountain’s 27 stellar holes more than hold their own. Each nine offers a unique set of challenges, so the short trek is well rewarded.

Featured Course: Mid-rangeColdwater GC
Avondale, Ariz.
From $50

There’s no better place for the golfer on a budget, according to the local papers, and Coldwater indeed makes a great case. Just 10 minutes west of downtown Phoenix, it’s a fun, fetching test with mountain framing and room for all types of golfers. Bombers can take on the Deep End tees (6,758 yards) while others swim in shallower waters.

Featured Course:ValueSkylinks at Long Beach
Long Beach, Calif.
From $20

What’s a beach without sand? Skylinks added 70 bunkers in 2004 to accentuate the course’s linksy flavor. Cal Olsen’s design is a longtime local favorite, from low handicappers who trudge to the 6,909-yard back tees, or juniors who march along the learning curve at 5,376 yards.

La Costa Renovation Earns Raves; Golf Discounts Always in Style

With golf course construction having slowed to a trickle, renovations of existing tracks are getting more attention than ever – especially when the remodeling involves a high-profile property.

Case in point: The venerable La Costa Resort in Carlsbad, Calif., former host to the PGA Tour’s Tournament of Champions. Its two Dick Wilson-designed courses, the Champions and South, were refurbished by the crack team of Damian Pascuzzo, Jeff Brauer and Steve Pate, earning a spot among LINKSMagazine’s Top 5 Renovations of 2011.

The architects overhauled many of Wilson’s massive fairway bunkers to restore their visual impact, and moved others to ramp up the risk-reward quotient. They also installed a set of “family tees” to attract those traveling with young golfers.

Of course, some things never go out of style – like the great discounts offered at hundreds of award-winning resorts and daily-fee facilities at TeeTimes.net. Check out this week’s featured foursome below.

Knows Great Deals

Without Joe, how would we know where to go?

We’re referring to Joe Passov, aka “Travelin’ Joe,” Golf Magazine’s been-there, played-that course reviewer and senior editor. The affable Passov is quick to offer honest takes on the game’s best-known destinations as well as those hidden gems, and his assessments usually hit the mark.

Recently, for instance, Passov was asked to namethree of Las Vegas’ best affordable golf courses, and he rattled off a trio of our favorites: Angel Park,Coyote Springs and Stallion Mountain. Jackpot!

Passov also scored with an article ranking his top courses, holes and more, listing Las Vegas his No. 1 Bachelor Party Golf Destination; Miami the No. 1 New Year’s Golf Destination; and The Boulders (Carefree, Ariz.) No. 1 for a Couples Trip. Yes, yes and yes.

OK, we’re done with our ode to Joe. Check out this week’s featured courses below, and remember: Always book through TeeTimes.net to get huge discounts on these and hundreds of other great courses.

Fleming Island offers five sets of tees, the longest of which have hosted U.S. Open qualifying.

Featured Course:ValueLegacy GC
Henderson, Nev.

Legacy’s 10th hole, with its postcard-perfect cluster of grassy card suits, hogs the spotlight, but holes 11 through 13 – the “Devil’s Triangle” – are truly worthy of acclaim. Indeed, the entire course is a jewel. Aside from the 10th, Arthur Hills’ layout is free of frills but packed with enjoyable moments.
